Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!!

We just got in from our first Youth Fair experience, and Madison is just swimming with happiness in her wins!  In addition to placing in photography, 3 of her baked items placed!  (Gran didn't agree with a few of the comments, but I think overall a success!)

Here are her pictures:

5th place Catch All:

 3rd Place Dominant Color:

1st Place & Grand Champion Night Photography:

1st Place and Grand Champion Architectual Design:

 2nd Place: Elemental Design:

1st Place & Grand Champion:  Flora

 2nd Place:  Animals

3rd Place:  People
What a week!  First bonding with Gran in the kitchen, then seeing her pictures and art place, and finally getting to bask in the fun of Thaine's pig showing.  It really is a neat little event in our little town--such good character building type stuff!  Yum!

orthodontics

On February 3rd Madison entered the world of Orthodontics, and her mouth (and our bank account!) will never be the same.  We've been diligently turning a metal thing in the roof of her mouth since that time, breaking and expanding her palet to make room for the horse teeth she's inherited from yours truly.  It's absolutely amazing the difference we've seen in her mouth over the last month.  While the last picture above shows a little more of her personality than the change in her teeth, I think you can still see the gaping whole between her front two teeth.  According the Dr. Mallory, once we stop expanding her mouth, that gap will shrink again, and her teeth will shift.  Next step:  braces in the fall.  First this, then double digits.  Our little girl is about to enter the tween years.  Give us strength.  And maybe a raise.

Five Years Old

Tomorrow Grady is turning FIVE.  I honestly can't believe it's already here.  Madison turned five after Grady was born, and now here I am with my baby being that same age.  It just doesn't seem possible!  :(  I know people say that over and over, and it's so odd how time seems to pass.  In some ways it feels like so long ago we brought home our last little baby, and in some ways it feels like just yesterday.  I'm taking the day off to spend with my little man, just Mommy and Grady, just to take a minute to slow down and watch him be four for one more day.  Next year he will be in kindergarten learning how to read, how to add, and how to be a real live student.

But for one more day he's still just my little baby.

We celebrated with a big boy birthday party yesterday at the house-with a fancy jump house and our bestest friends and family.

San Antonio Catch All...

After walking the River Walk, and taking the boat ride, we adventured to the San Antonio Children's Museum, along with everyone else in Texas.  While it was crowded, the kids really did seem to enjoy themselves.  Only my children would want to actually play chess with the Giant Chess board, or actually want to add up the prices in the grocery store.  :)  We spent the better part of Tuesday afternoon there, saving the Alamo for Wednesday.

The kids were sooooooooooo excited to go to the Alamo, I'm guessing because they had talked about it in class.  Once Grady realized it was the site of a Battle, he was convinced Grandad fought there.  After I stopped laughing, I tried to explain it wasn't true, but I'm not so sure I was that convincing.  :)  We walked the grounds, and marveled at the bravery of the men.  I'm sure PawPaw would be so proud of all the history we talked about that day!

Of course, Sea World was my favorite thing of all.  Madison had a few memories of our trip a few years ago, but since Tanner was 2, and Grady was just a glimmer, it was a whole new world to them.  By the end of the day, they were making plans to become Whale and Dolphin trainers, and were in love with Shamu as they rocked out to the last show.  :)  Yep, my little thoughts are weaving into their little brains.  Overall, a wonderful break from reality.  Wonderful.  :)

Sea World!!

We spent our last day in San Antonio at Sea World. This was Madison and Tanner's second trip, but Grady's first. We met up with Chris, Amanda, and Rhylan for the day, and Todd subjected them to his grueling amusement park schedule. I think they left exhausted, as we did...but we had the max fun per second guaranteed! We ended the day with a rockin Shamu show, and the kids in love with all things dolphin and whale. Mission accomplished.

St. Paddy's Day

We celebrated our favorite Irish holiday by going to mass in a Cathedral over 100 years old...the kids lit candles, and I pointed all the wonderful things those old churches have....stain glass, true confessionals, an elaborate alter, the pipe organ...lots of history to take in for sure.

From there we met Todd at an Irish pub for lunch...fish and chips all around, and a few beers for the grown ups, of course...

It's a balance, right?
